Lightning protection concept

A lightning rod is a very important instrument in a lightning protection system due to its three components: a direct lightning rod, a lightning conductor, and a grounding device. Each part has a very small resistance. The cross-section must reach a certain level to withstand extremely large currents when lightning strikes.

The lightning rod will "absorb" the lightning transmitted into the downconductor and quickly dissipate the lightning current to the grounding device buried deep in the ground. The operation process of the lightning protection system is a closed process, so the grounding system must be in good contact with the ground to be able to conduct the current to the ground as quickly as possible when struck by lightning. However, the purpose of lightning rods is often misunderstood. Many people think that they are used to "attract" lightning. In essence, lightning rods provide a low-resistance path to the ground that can generate currents in the event of a lightning strike. If there is a lightning strike, the system will carry harmful currents out of the building and to the ground safely. This system is capable of handling very large currents. If the lightning rod material is not a good conductor, the structures will suffer great damage.

Lightning rods should be installed as high as possible. Because the higher the installation, the greater the protection range of its construction. But it also should not be installed too high, because if so, the certainty of the lightning rod will not be guaranteed. When encountering high winds, it may tilt or fall, making the lightning rod ineffective. In open places where lightning strikes often occur, lightning rods should be planted, each about 20–30 meters apart.

One thing to keep in mind is to absolutely avoid staying under large trees on days when there is thunder and lightning. Given that trees higher than the ground conduct the most electricity when struck by lightning. It is highly likely that you may be struck by lightning if you seek cover from the rain under those trees, which is extremely risky for your life.

When it storms, you should return home quickly. Do not go out on the street if it is not necessary. The circuit breaker must be disconnected because if lightning strikes the line, it will follow the wire into the house. The radio antenna must be removed from the machine to prevent damage from lightning and damage to viewers.
